What is art therapy? Often times, there are no words to adequately express our thoughts and feelings. Images and creativity are powerful tools to assist us in expression, understanding, problem solving, and healing. During art therapy sessions, the participant creates his or her own art with the guidance and support from a registered art therapist, who is trained in both art and psychology. Clients may also choose to engage in their own art making outside of the sessions and bring in their art to discuss and review in therapy. Art therapy participants do not need previous art training, nor do they need to possess "artistic talent" or skills. There is no "right" way to create art in art therapy, and what a participant creates or chooses not to create is an important expression: a reflection of his or her true self at that moment in time.
